General info and technical characteristics
Before getting to the heart of the topic, I would like to provide you with some general info and explanations about TIM Wi-Fi modems and their technical characteristics. In the current state of things, the modems distributed by the operator in conjunction with the subscription of an Internet subscription are: the historians ADSL2+ Wi-Fi N Standard, Technicolor e Alice Gate VoIP 2 plus Wi-Fi, the most recent ADSL2 + Wi-Fi N DA2210, modem Sercomm and brand new Fiber modem intended, in fact, only for fiber optic lines.
In the case of Wi-Fi modems for ADSL, they are all of the type ADSL2 + and therefore they support the maximum data rate of up to 24 Mega. The fiber optic modems, on the other hand, are compatible with offers up to 200 Mega on technology VDSL and in addition to this type of connection, they also support ADSL.
A separate discussion also deserves to be made for the type of Wi-Fi supported. Depending on the model of modem owned, various classes of Wi-Fi can be supported (which vary as the data transfer speed is changed): wireless b with a maximum speed of 11 Mbps, wireless g gives 54 Mbps and n wireless from 300 or 450 Mbps. Then there is the standard wireless AC which is only supported by the latest modems and guarantees data transfer speeds of up to 1.3Gbps (1.331 Mbps).
All these standards, with the exception of wireless AC, operate on the 2.4GHz radio band (the "standard" 14-channel one) but there are some modems that are able to transmit the wireless signal even on the 5GHz band and that for this very reason they take the name of Dual Band.
All TIM Wi-Fi modems are then equipped with more Ethernet ports, namely those that allow you to connect the device to the network in a physical way, and a port for managing the telephone component (traditional or VoIP). Depending on the model, however, there may be one USB port, through which to connect a hard disk or printer to the modem and use them on all devices connected to the local network, and the button to enable the defined function WPS, which allows the modem to communicate with printers, repeaters and other wireless devices at the push of a button.
As for the sales package, generally inside there is the modem itself, an Ethernet cable and a telephone cable, a power supply, a filter for the telephone socket and an illustrative manual (but even in this case the content may vary depending on the model of device received) .
Connect the TIM Wi-Fi modem
In order to start using TIM's Wi-Fi modem and therefore to be able to understand how it works and use it for online browsing, the first fundamental step you need to take is to put the device into operation.
To do this, connect thepower pack of the modem to the latter and to the power socket and turn on the device by pressing the Power button present on the same. Then wait a few moments for the appropriate light (or the LED corresponding to the relative icon) on it to light up. Then enter the telephone cable into the wall socket and into the appropriate input attached to the appliance.
Now make sure that your computer and any other devices in your possession that you want to connect to the Internet through your TIM connection are correctly "hooked" to the modem. The connection can be made via Wi-Fi, precisely, and in this case check that the appropriate light on the modem (or the LED corresponding to the relative icon) is illuminated and then make sure that on the computer, smartphone, tablet or whoever the network generated by the device (whose name should be Alice- [series of numbers], Telecom- [series of numbers] o TIM- [series of numbers]).
Alternatively, you can connect via Ethernet cable, with one end of the cable in one of the numbered ports of the modem and another in the Ethernet port of the computer or in any case both of the device you intend to connect to the Internet. Once the connection between the two devices has been established, on the modem you should find the appropriate light (or the LED corresponding to the relative icon) illuminated.
Adjust the TIM Wi-Fi modem settings
Now let's see what needs to be done to be able to adjust the settings for using the TIM Wi-Fi modem. To do this, you must first access the management panel of the latter. Below you will find therefore explained how to do it and what are the main settings on which it is possible to intervene.
Log in to the management panel
In order to access the management panel of your TIM Wi-Fi modem, the first thing you need to do is to start the Web browser you generally use (eg. Chrome) and type in the address bar one of the following coordinates then pressing the key Submit on the keyboard.
- http://alicegate if you use a modem ADSL
- http://modemtelecom if you use a modem fiber
If the coordinates in question do not lead to any page, you can try to access the modem management panel by typing 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. If you continue to have problems, you can find the correct address of the modem by taking a look at thelabel stuck under or on the back of the latter, there should be a wording dedicated to accessing the device.
If you continue to have problems in doing so, read my article on how to enter the TIM modem through which I have explained to you how to identify the correct coordinates for access to any TIM home modem, also by going to "query " the computer.
Once you have entered the correct address, you will be asked to enter a combination of in order to access the device management panel username e Password (which you will always find indicated on the label affixed to it) or, if it is the first time you log in, to set a new password.
In the first case, try with admin / admin o admin / password which are the default combinations of most modems (and in case of problems take a further look at the aforementioned label), while to set a new password, type it in the appropriate fields on the screen click on the button to save changes.
Open the doors
Once you have accessed the modem control panel, you can change the various settings available. If what you are interested in is open doors uTorrent, eMule or other software for P2P, first go to the menu related to port mapping. Depending on the model of modem you have, the port mapping function may be located in the section Internet (Smart Modem Sercomm), in that access control (Smart Modem Technicolor) or that Advanced Settings (Modem Fibra o ADSL2+ Wi-Fi N - DA2210).
Then choose the item for create a new rule, configure port mapping o create a virtual server. If you are using an English interface modem, the button to click to start creating a new rule should be Add.
Then fill out the form that is proposed to you with the data relating to the door you intend to open and wait for the following scheme.
- In fields Initial external door, Final external door (o Public door) is Internal door (o LAN port) you must enter the number of the door to open.
- In the field Internal host, Destination IP o Device you must enter the local IP address of the computer on which you want to use the program you are configuring.
- In the field Protocol you must indicate if you are opening a door TCP o UDP.
- In the field Application, Description o Service name you have to type or choose the name of the application or service for which you want to open the port.
Finally, make sure that the rule you just created is active and then click on the button Save / Activate to save and apply the changes.
For more details, you can refer to my tutorial on how to open the router ports through which I have dealt with the matter in great detail.
Change the Wi-Fi password
Instead, you are interested in understanding how to go about change the password of the wireless network generated by your TIM Wi-Fi modem? Then go to the section on basic settings of the modem, select the item related to Wi-Fi and click on the button for configure the Wi-Fi network. If you are using the Technicolor Smart Modem you simply have to click on the name of the Wi-Fi network to be modified, while if you use the Sercomm Smart Modem you have to go directly to the card WiFi.
Then set the encryption mode WPA2 o WPA-PSK TKIP-AES 256 bit and a security key consisting of 12-16 characters, including lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers and special characters. The operation must be carried out both for the 2.4GHz network that for the 5GHz network (if your modem supports it).
If you think you need more info about it, you can check out my post on how to change TIM WiFi password.
Change Wi-Fi channel
If you want to understand how change the channel of the wireless network of going to the menu with the Wi-Fi settings as explained in the previous step of the guide after which you have to choose to modify the 2.4GHz network and you need to set a radio channel between 1, 6 e 11 (the only channels that do not overlap each other and therefore offer better performance) taking care to select the one less used by the surrounding connections.
Regarding the mailings reti a 5GHz, changing the radio channel should not be essential as these are less prone to interference networks. So, I suggest you leave the default settings active. Then, of course, do as you please.
For more information on the matter, I suggest you read my post on how to change WiFi channel, I'm sure it will be very useful.
Other settings
At this point in the situation you should therefore have quite clear ideas on how TIM's Wi-Fi modem works! In fact, you were able to log in to the management panel of the same, you understood how to open the doors, how to proceed to change the Wi-Fi password and what steps to take to change the channel of the wireless network.
However, if you want to learn more about the subject and want to find out what are the other features of the device you own, you can connect to the section dedicated totechnical assistance of the TIM website, select the name of your modem from the left sidebar and download the manual of the modem by clicking on the appropriate item.
