How to open XLSX files on PC
If you want to know how to open xlsx file on pc, in the next chapters I will show you some software that you can use to succeed in your goal. You will find some free solutions, but also some paid ones, such as Microsoft's well-known Excel software.
Microsoft Excel (Windows / macOS)
The first solution I recommend you use for open XLSX files on your computer is, of course, Microsoft Excel which is available for both Windows and macOS as part of the Office package or as a separate solution.
More precisely, you can get Office from Microsoft through the subscription to the service Microsoft 365 (which also includes online space on OneDrive, Skype talk minutes and the Office mobile apps with prices starting from 7 euro / month o 9 euro / month, in the latter case with a 30-day free trial) or by purchasing the classic suite with payment One-off da 149 €.
In this regard, I would like to point out that on the Mr Key Shop website you can find licenses at a discounted price for Office and Windows in a completely legal way. These are, in fact, 100% original licenses from companies and companies that have switched to the cloud or subscription services and therefore found themselves with unused licenses to be disposed of.
Alternatively, as I told you before, you can download the stand-alone version of Excel for Windows 10 at the price of 135 euros or the Mac version of the program for free, which however requires a subscription to Microsoft 365 to be used. Find more information on how to download Excel in my guide dedicated to the topic.
Once downloaded and installed Microsoft Excel, the latter will automatically be set as the default program for opening, viewing and editing spreadsheets. This therefore means that to open an XLSX file you just need to double-click on it and wait for Excel to run to show you the contents of the spreadsheet.
Alternatively, launch Microsoft Excel and, in the screen that is shown to you, select the items Open> This PC or Open> Browse, to search for the XLSX file in the folders on your computer. When you have located it, select it and press the button apri.
If for some reason Excel is not set as the default software to open XLSX files, remedy the problem by following the instructions in my tutorial on how to change the default programs.
LibreOffice (Windows / macOS / Linux)
You can also use the program to open an XLSX file Calc included in LibreOffice: the well-known free and open source productivity suite compatible with Windows, MacOS e Linux and with all Microsoft Office documents.
You can get the suite in question, go to its official website and click on the button Download the xxx version. At this point, if you are using Windows, wait for the download of the .msi files is done and double-click on it to start it. All you have to do is follow the on-screen instructions to install the suite.
If you use a Macinstead, download the interface translation of the program in cittàn (not included "standard" as in the Windows version), by clicking on the appropriate button on the official website. Afterwards, you can proceed with the installation of the program and language pack as you can find explained in this tutorial of mine dedicated to LibreOffice.
Once installation is complete, LibreOffice will automatically be set as the default program for opening certain types of files. Therefore, to open an XLSX file, simply double-click on the document you want to view.
Alternatively, launch LibreOffice via its quick launch icon and select the item Open File on its home screen. At this point, locate the document to open, select it and press the key apri; or change the default program to open XLSX files on your PC.
Numbers (macOS)
If you own a Mac and you want to know how to open an XLSX file without using Excel or other third-party software, know that you can achieve this thanks to Numbers, Apple's productivity application dedicated to creating, editing and viewing spreadsheets.
If it is already installed on your Mac Numbers, opening an XLSX file is very simple: to succeed, all you have to do is double-click on the file you want to view. Next, wait for the software window to launch, showing you the contents of the spreadsheet.
If, on the other hand, it is not installed on your Mac Numbers, you can download it by clicking on this link, which refers to the Mac App Store. Press, then on View in the Mac App Store and press the button Get on the Mac App Store screen.
Once this is done, wait for the Numbers download and installation to be started and completed, after which you will be able to open XLSX files without any kind of problem, following the same instructions that I reported in the previous paragraphs.
If Numbers is present on your Mac but is not set as the default software to open XLSX files, you can remedy the problem by following my guide on how to change the default programs; alternatively you can open a one-time XLSX with Numbers by right clicking on the document and selecting the items Open with> Numbers give the menu that you come purpose.
How to open XLSX files online
want open an XLSX file online? In this case, you can rely on a service for viewing and editing documents directly from the browser. Here are some that may be right for you.
Excel Online
A valid solution to open calculation documents online is Excel Online from Microsoft. It is a completely free service, which can be used without necessarily having a license for Excel or Office; all you need is a Microsoft account.
To open a spreadsheet with Excel Online, then reach the official website of the service and enter the login data of your Microsoft account.
Now you have to proceed with loading the documents in XLSX format: in the screen that is shown to you, then press on the item Load and open located on the right and select the file of your interest. At the end of the upload, double-click on the name of the file just imported, to view its contents directly in the browser and make the changes of your interest.
The changes will be automatically saved online, on your OneDrive space; to download the document offline go to the menu File> Save As> Download a Copy (top left).
Google Sheets
Another solution you can employ to open XLSX files online is Google Sheets, part of the productivity suite included in the Google Drive cloud storage service developed by the Internet search giant.
To use this service, you need a Google account, which you can easily create (if you don't have one) by following the instructions I gave you in this tutorial. Once this is done, go to the main page of Google Sheets and log in with your Google account.
At this point, click on the button Empty at the top and then tap on the items File> Open. Then press on the tab Charge and drag the XLSX file you want to edit online into the box. Wait, therefore, for the import to take place, at the end of which you will be shown the contents of the document.
The changes will be automatically saved on your cloud space; to download a copy of the document offline, go to the menu File> Download> Microsoft Excel (.xlsx), top left.
How to open XLSX files on smartphones and tablets
If you want open an XLSX file on your smartphone or tablet, then on Android o iOS / iPadOS, what you need is an app that supports this format. In the next chapters I will recommend some solutions that may be right for you.
Excel e Office (Android/iOS/iPadOS)
The first app I recommend you use to reach your goal is Microsoft Excel. This is a free app from Microsoft for production that is completely free for devices with a screen equal to or less than 10,1 inches in size. For larger displays, a subscription to Microsoft 365 is required, starting at € 7 / month.
To download it on Android, reach this link from your device, which points to the Play Store, and press the button Get. If your smartphone or tablet is not equipped with the Play Store, refer to one of the many alternative stores for Android.
Su iPhone e iPadinstead, through this link which refers toApp Store, you can download the aforementioned app: press the button Get and unlock download and installation via Face ID, Touch ID or Apple ID password.
Now, launch the Microsoft Excel and press on the tab apri, down. Then you just have to select one of the sources available on the screen (local memory and many cloud storage services), to proceed with the identification of the calculation document. For example, if the latter is present on the device memory, you have to press on the item Shop by Department; if, on the other hand, it's on OneDrive, you have to choose OneDrive.
If you followed the directions I gave you to the letter, the XLSX file will be opened by the app Microsoft Excel, and you will see the content of the document in question. In case you want to know more about this app, I recommend reading my tutorial dedicated to it.
Please note that you can perform the same operation described in the previous paragraphs also with the app Microsoft Office (Android / iOS / iPadOS). This is an app that includes all of Microsoft's major productivity tools. It is also available free of charge for devices with screens up to 10,1 inches.
Google Drive and Sheets (Android / iOS / iPadOS)
Another solution that you can put into practice to open an XLSX file on smartphones and tablets is the one that requires the use of Google Sheets. This is the Google productivity service of the same name, which I told you about in this chapter.
Generally speaking, you may find the app pre-installed on your smartphone or tablet Android, inside the Google folder on the home screen. If not, you can download from the Play Store at this link, by pressing the button Get.
Su iPhone e iPadInstead, you can proceed to download the app from the virtual store of these Apple devices. Therefore, reach the App Store via this link, press the button Get and unlock download and installation via Face ID, Touch ID or Apple ID password.
To open an XLSX file, launch the app Google Sheets e premi sull 'icon della cartella, up. At this point, select the item Archival space avail. and locate the location in the device memory where the document to open is present. Press on it, to import it into the app and view it.
Please note that you can also upload a document to Google Drive. In this case, thanks also to the homonymous app of this service available on the Play Store or on the App Store, you can proceed to view the XLSX file, without having to use the Google Sheets app.
Other solutions to open XLSX files
In addition to the solutions I told you about in the previous chapters, know that there are also other productivity suites on smartphones and tablets. These are free solutions that may require in-app purchases or subscriptions to unlock some features, such as removing ads.

How to open XLSX
