Open a file with a given program on Windows

Change default program
As just mentioned, there are several ways you can take to change the default applications on Windows: choose the one that seems most comfortable to you and use it following the instructions I'm about to give you.
Properties menu
If you want to change the program with which to open a certain type of file by default, right-click on any file of the type you want to associate with another program and select the item Property give the menu to compare your schermo.
In the window that opens, select the tab Generalclick on your button Change and choose, from the box that appears on the desktop, the application you want to use as the default to open the type of file you have selected.
If in the list of programs proposed by Windows the software of your interest is not present, click on the item Other apps and you will be shown a larger list of applications. To select one of the programs you have installed on your PC, go to the path Local disk (eg C :)> Programs> Program name (Or Local disk (eg C :)> Programs (x86)> Program name) and double-click the file .exe related to the program of your interest.
When completed, click on the buttons Apply e OK and the changes will be applied immediately.
Control Panel
The most recent versions of Windows (from 7 onwards) allow you to manage all predefined programs from a convenient control panel screen.

If you want to set the default programs to use for specific file types (so for specific file extensions), click on the item Choose default apps by file type and, in the next screen, identify the type of file for which you intend to change the default application.
Now, expand the drop-down menu that is next to the extension of your interest, choose the program you want to associate with it and that's it.
If you are using a version of Windows earlier than 10, for example Windows 7, you can manage the predefined programs by clicking on the button Home (the flag icon located in the lower left corner of the screen) and accessing the Control Panel. If you don't know how to access the Control Panel, search for "control panel" in the Start menu and click on the first search result.
In the window that opens, click on the icon Programs i went his Default Programs> Set Default Programs to view the list of all the main software installed on the PC. Then select a program you want to make default and click on the button Set this program as the default: in this way, the program you select will become the default software to open all file types it supports (eg videos and music for Windows Media Player).

Open a file with another program
If you don't want to change the default program with which to open a certain type of file, but you want to open a single file with a software other than the one currently set as default, right-click on it, select the item Open with from the context menu and choose one of the proposed programs.
If in the Windows list there is no program you intend to use to open your file, select the item Choose another app from the menu Open withi went his Other apps and select the software of your interest from the box that is displayed on the screen.
If the software of your interest is not even present in the box that is shown on the screen, scroll the latter up and down, click on the item Look for another app on this PC and select "manually" the executable with which to open the file you have selected.
If you want, you can also create a "special" link and have a certain file open automatically with software other than the one set as default. To do this, start the creation of a new shortcut (by right-clicking on an empty spot on the desktop or in the File Explorer and selecting the items New> Link from the menu that opens) and use the following formatting.
